What is cervical discopathy?
Cervical discopathy is a common spinal condition. It involves damage or degeneration of the intervertebral discs in the cervical region. The discs, however, act as „shock absorbers” that dissipate the forces acting on the spine during various activities (e.g., walking, running, lifting weights, playing with a child).
To damage to intervertebral discs occurs most often through their rubbing, protrusion or prolapse. This, in turn, leads to pressure on the nerve roots or spinal cord, which causes pain (especially in the neck area) and other discomforts (such as tingling and muscle weakness in the upper extremities).
Prognosis of cervical disc disease are usually good, provided early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
In most cases, conservative treatment is used, which includes:
- physiotherapy and rehabilitation (e.g. manual therapy, kinesitherapy, muscle relaxation),
- Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs,
- muscle strengthening exercises,
- Education on proper posture and prevention of cervical discopathy,
- Lifestyle changes (such as avoiding overloading).
In rare and more serious cases, conservative treatment may not be sufficient. In such a situation, surgical treatment, which involves replacing the damaged intervertebral disc, with an implant, may be necessary.
Cervical discopathy - the most common causes and symptoms
Ailments, disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, rarely have a single, direct cause. Instead, very often it is the resultant of several factors: both environmental and biological conditions.
The main cause of cervical discopathy is degeneration of the discs, associated with the body's natural aging process. The condition is also very often linked to lifestyle, work and daily habits (e.g., non-ergonomic workstation, improper head position during sleep, „text neck syndrome”). Other risk factors include trauma, genetic predisposition, postural defects, physical inactivity and obesity, among others.
Symptoms of cervical discopathy They can be varied. Their severity depends on the degree of damage and the site of compression. The most characteristic is severe, chronic pain in the neck, which can radiate to the head, shoulders, hands and fingers. Patients also often complain of Tingling, numbness and muscle weakness in the upper extremities. In addition, dizziness and difficulty maintaining balance may also occur.
Don't ignore any of the above symptoms, just consult a competent specialist as soon as possible. Physiotherapeutic support is invaluable, especially if we are talking about modern therapeutic and rehabilitation methods.
