What exactly is a „sagging foot”?
Falling Foot (English. foot drop) is not a disease in itself, but a symptom. Means Inability to perform dorsiflexion of the foot - That is, the movement of lifting the toes and dorsum of the foot upward (toward the tibia). As a result, a person with a drooping foot is not able to walk properly, but has to take steps starting from the toes. In addition, the lack of full control in the foot forces unnaturally high leg raise - Otherwise, there would be a snagging of the foot on the ground.
In the long run, this way of moving, leads to excessive tension on individual muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. As a result overloads arise, and this causes pain, inflammation, mobility limitations and functional impairment in other areas of the body.
What is the cause of a sagging foot?
Falling foot is an ailment with a complex background. It usually takes from damage to nerve pathways, which are responsible for controlling the extensor muscles of the foot (mainly the tibialis anterior muscle). The most common culprit is fibula nerve palsy, which, due to its shallow course in the area of the fibula head (below the knee), is extremely susceptible to mechanical injury, fracture or compression (e.g. in the course of fascial tightness syndrome).
The source of the problem may also lie higher up. Very often, foot sagging is the result of Discopathy of the lumbar spine (usually at the L4-L5 level). This is where a herniated intervertebral disc can compress the nerve root, cutting off impulses running to the leg.
The list of the most common causes is supplemented by serious pelvic and hip injuries. As a result, the sciatic nerve or sacral plexus may be damaged. In addition, foot drop can be the result of metabolic diseases (e.g., diabetes) or diseases of the central nervous system (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis).
The main cause of foot sinking can therefore be located at three different levels:
- Knee level (fibular nerve damage),
- The level of the spine (lumbar discopathy),
- central level (stroke).
Because of such a wide range of potential risk factors that go beyond just nerve damage, a very important part of treatment is precise diagnosis. It makes it possible to plan rehabilitation in such a way as to solve the problem and improve the patient's quality of life.

What is the rehabilitation of a sagging foot?
The foundation of effective therapy is always to get to the source of the problem. So first we need to remove the factor that has „cut the power” to your foot. Treatment of a sagging foot is a process that requires patience and regularity. The prognosis is usually good. Most patients who diligently go through rehabilitation recover. The most important thing is perseverance and cooperation with a physiotherapist, who will plan the entire process and supervise the recovery.
The rehabilitation plan is always tailored to the individual case. It may include, among other things: specialized manual techniques, electrostimulation or strengthening exercises (also performed at home by the patient). The success of rehabilitation depends mainly on the patient himself: the greater the regularity and conscientiousness, the higher the chance of a faster recovery. It is worth mentioning that in some cases the only solution is surgical treatment. However, even in such a situation, rehabilitation is still necessary after surgery.
Foot drop - a signal that cannot be ignored
Although sagging foot can indicate a serious threat to health and life (e.g., stroke, cancer), in most cases recovery is possible. Often this is the result of nerve compression, which can be cured with proper therapy and rehabilitation. Timing, however, is key: The sooner you seek help, the better the chance of a full recovery.
